Position Overview
- Responsible for developing and executing initiatives related to improving the volunteer experience at Dog Star Rescue. Works with leadership across the rescue to identify and prioritize these opportunities.
- Manages the Volunteer Team, including setting up monthly meetings. Sets general direction for each focus area for the volunteer team. Volunteer team focus areas include:
- Onboarding – one coordinator who focuses on bringing new volunteers into the rescue, answering any questions they may have, and directing them to teams of interest. The Onboarding coordinator also schedules tours of HQ for new volunteers and admits new volunteers to the volunteer Facebook group.
- Recognition – one coordinator who focuses on recognition initiatives, including our Shining Star award (volunteer of the month), as well as merchandise-based programs within the kennel and foster teams. Works with departments at DSR to develop other recognition initiatives as needed.
- Recruitment – one coordinator who identifies DSR positions that need to be filled and generates social/email blasts to fill these positions. Identifies opportunities within the community to recruit for more volunteers.
- Maintains all Dog Star Rescue job descriptions
- Manages the interview process for new Dog Star Rescue board members
- Coordinates the development and release of the Dog Star Rescue quarterly newsletter
- Plans two general volunteer meetings a year (winter, spring/summer)
- Sends key announcements to volunteer base as needed
- Helps triage volunteer issues, including volunteer conduct
- Manages code of conduct
- Periodically reviews volunteer contract
- Manages volunteer list within Dog Star IT systems (Donorview)
- Helps coordinate and manage volunteer training and education opportunities

Dress Code
- When volunteering at an adoption event, wear your red Dog Star Rescue shirt, with a preference for jeans, sturdy shoes, preferably sneakers or boots that you don’t mind getting dirty, and no flip flops.
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical, and customer service skills, ability to multitask with the desire to interface with all kinds of people, lead, mentor, and train a team of volunteers.
- Problem resolution and seeks answers independently and enthusiastically demonstrates flexibility.
- Takes charge and the initiative to navigate and diffuse charged personalities and works well under pressure.
- Good time management skills and is able to respond promptly to rescue communication (text, email, phone calls).
- Work independently in a collaborative environment.
- A deep understanding of all the departments within DSR is a plus, but can be learned on the job.
- Experience volunteering in an existing DSR team is a plus.
- Passionate about dogs, a basic understanding of caring for a dog, with the ability to interact positively with dogs of ALL breeds and sizes.
- Computer literate with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Meet, and Shelter Manager or the willingness to learn.
