About Dog Star Rescue

100% volunteer, non-profit dog rescue based in Hartford CT area

Dog Star Rescue, a non-profit, volunteer-run organization, is a dog rescue organization based out of the Hartford CT area. We take in owner surrenders right here in CT, and also work closely with established partner shelters Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Louisiana to save the lives of loving and loyal dogs who have lost their way and find themselves on death row. Our team of wonderful volunteers get these adoptable dogs the medical and emotional care they need so they can transition into a loving forever home. To date we’ve placed over 7,800 dogs with new, forever families and we are so proud of the difference we are making in the world.

We are all volunteers

All of our amazing volunteers are unpaid and donate their time because of their passion for helping dogs. They spend significant time each week helping guide dogs to a wonderful new life. If you ask our volunteers, they’ll tell you they do it for a wide variety of reasons, including personal satisfaction in helping address a nationwide problem, their love of dogs, and a desire to have fun socializing with like-minded people. Dog Star is always looking for new volunteers to join our mission.

What’s the meaning behind our name?

The name Dog Star comes from the common name for the star Sirius, reflecting its prominence in its constellation, Canis Major (Greater Dog). The symbolism of the star as a guide to a safe passage is what we strive to do for our adoptable dogs as we find them a new life with a loving family.

  • Rescue as many dogs as possible, of all ages and breeds, to the best of our ability, with the volunteer and financial resources available.
  • Match qualified applicants with adoptable dogs, and educate adopters about the responsibility of providing a lifelong home to a rescue dog.
  • Provide foster-based resources to meet the medical, behavioral, and emotional needs of the dogs in our care.
  • Offer meaningful, rewarding volunteer opportunities and experiences in the communities we serve to support our mission of saving dogs’ lives.
  • Extend resources, services, or programs to our community that will enrich and transform the lives of companion animals and their owners.
